Washington, DC -- In a series shrouded in controversy, the Islanders were able to take care of the Washington Capitals 4-1, winning two of the last three games that took place after the controversy. Pavel Datsyuk was named series MVP, as he potted 5 goals and 5 assists, while youngster Anze Kopitar was able to contribute 11 points in 5 games as the 2nd line centre. "I really grew up in this series," said Kopitar. "I have gone from a playoff freshman to a guy who really feels he has found his place on this team. I don't need to be the #1 centre on this team to have a major impact. I know someday my time will come, but right now I am learning so much behind [Peter] Forsberg. This team has really come together over the past 5 games, and we really feel that we are not close to finished our playoff run. We are not content with simply going to round 2 for the first time in franchise history, we clearly want to win. That's why guys like Forsberg, Linden and Niedermayer were brought in."
The Capitals will now rest and await their 2nd round opponent. They will need the rest, as star defenceman Scott Niedermayer will be out for a considerable amount of time with a lower body injury. Niclas Havelid is also day to day with a broken leg and skull fracture. He is not expected to miss any time in round 2.
