Zherdev Joins Team in Montreal
The Montreal Canadiens have recalled right winger Nikolai Zherdev from Hamilton of the OTMHL.
Earlier this week, TSN's Bob McKenzie reported that the Canadiens winger and restricted free-agent-to-be was less than pleased with his demotion, and reportedly shunned an extension offer in favor of a trade.
Our sources can confirm that an extension offer was rejected, but the nature of his recall is still up for speculation. It could be a showcase of the Russian sniper hoping to expedite trade talks or a good faith effort by Habs management to re-open contract discussions.
He will play in Saturday's night game, when the Canadiens host the Blue Jackets at the Bell Centre.
Forwards Jordin Tootoo and Maxim Lapierre were sent to Hamilton to facilitate Zherdev's recall financially, and open up a roster spot for potential waiver claims.
Guerin On the Ice, Ready to Play
Canadiens captain Bill Guerin hit the ice on Thursday for his first full-contact practice since suffering an injury against Colorado nearly three weeks ago. Guerin says he expects to be 100% by Saturday and is anxious to see action after missing seven games.
"It'll be great to get back out there," said Guerin. "The team's been playing great the past few games and I'm ready to contribute again and hopefully keep it going."
Guerin, who signed a 4 year $4.5M contract in the offseason, currently leads the Canadiens in scoring with 30 goals and 61 points in 57 games this year.
