The mighty Leafs were no match for the younger, quicker Devils Thursday night as the home side was embrassed 5 to 1. The game was broken open in the second period when Jersey out shot Toronto 16 to 6 and scored twice to take a 3 - 1 lead.
The Leafs couldn't keep up with the speed of the Devils in the third and had to resort to goon tactics. Darcy Tucker was ejected from the game after he high sticked top scorer Patrik Elias and Jere Lethinen was given a double minor for his cheap shot against the much smaller Scott Gomez. At game's end, the Leafs had given the Devils 8 power play opportunities which they capitalized on twice.
Much to the delight of GM McLaughlin, Eddie the Eagle was chased from the game halfway through the third period after the Devils scored their fifth goal.
"The Leafs will be in a pretty bad mood next time we play each other." GM McLaughlin said as he and the entire Devils team were partying in downtown T.O.
